Early in his career, Fitzgerald showed a desire toward working on large-scale sculpture. Even while creating large works, where dealing with some of the natural problems inherent in sculpting, namely gravity, physical limitations, and constraints of materials, he still drew his aesthetic conclusions from his direct method of sculpting.
