Fitzgerald has also developed a deep interest in a "middle scale" series. This work is considered "Human Scale" or slightly larger. One thing about the experience of hard sculpture is its sheer physical presence. Large works have a monumental feel, while small works have a more intimate one. The sculpture done in the human scale, he believes, invokes a commonality of shared space, and referential identity. Most all of these are vertical sculptures. He believes that things in the human scale generate a sense of identity. The physical scale has a mutual relationship in space, which constitutes a presence of something, a thing to contend with. The life quality or energy of a thing is closer to the viewer. His work in this scale is sometimes abstractive and figurative, or plant like. There is a totemic vertical sense of evolution, of something growing.
