Fitzgerald has an extensive background in exhibiting his sculpture and has received numerous honors and awards. Fitzgerald¹s first professional competitive exhibition of one of his works was in 1980 in the Mid States Art Exhibition at the Evansville Museum of Arts and Sciences. This competitive exhibition is one of the oldest, most well-respected exhibitions in Middle America. His work has been represented several times in this exhibition, as well as in the prestigious Mid States Craft Exhibition. He exhibited in the Mid States Art Exhibition as recently as last year, which was the 50th anniversary of the exhibition. Other well-known sculptors such as David Smith and George Ricky have also had their work represented in the Mid States Art Exhibition.
Another prestigious Mid America competitive art exhibition at which Fitzgerald¹s art has been represented is the Wabash Valley Art Exhibition at the Sheldon Swope Art Museum in Terre Haute, Indiana. David Smith, as well as other prestigious artists, has also had works selected to be exhibited in this very old and respected art exhibition. Fitzgerald won the top award in the sculpture category in 1984 and has been an exhibitor numerous times. His work is now part of their permanent collection. The Swope Art Museum honored him by hosting an exhibition of his sculpture. Fitzgerald has exhibited his work in many national and international competitive art exhibitions.
One of these is an exhibition called "Small Works" sponsored by New York University in New York City. "Small Works" is an international exhibition of works no larger than 12 inches in any one dimension. One of the "Small Works" exhibitions for which Fitzgerald¹s work was selected had over 3400 entries, of which only 400 were chosen for exhibit. Fitzgerald¹s work was selected to receive an honorable mention.
